A History of DVD production cost
DVD production development has changed hugely over the past 8 years, becoming more affordable. When NBS Studio first started DVD Production back in 1999 a blank DVD disc would cost £150 each!! If a mistake was made in producing a DVD master disc it was therefore going to cost £150 for each DVD disc that was wasted. This soon taught us NOT to make mistakes. A fast learning curve was needed to ensure a high level of understanding of the DVD production process was obtained, and producing a DVD was a seamless process knowing all the pitfalls and how to work them through. Over 10 years later we now know DVD's like the back of our hands.
DVD disc costs
The production costs of DVD's have dropped in price since 1999. The cost of a single DVD disc is currently around £0.20 at the cheap end of the scale, up to £0.60 for a high quality Verbatim Waterproof printable disc.
DVD encoding speeds
DVD encoding speeds have also increased driving down production costs. The time it now takes to produce a finished DVD disc is a fraction of the time it used to take to produce. Back in 1999 it would take around 60 minutes to produce a typical DVD video lasting between 15-20 minutes runtime. Now that same disc would be produced in just 10 minutes, which includes the time to transcode the video to the DVD compliant MPEG-2 and write to the disc.
How interactive are DVD videos?
DVD's don't have to be just video. DVD's can be produced with interactive questions and answers, which can contain helpful thumbnail videos on each menu. The maximum menu structure for DVD production is 99 menus. This should be sufficient for a fairly complex interactive quiz produced on DVD.
DVD authoring with ROM data
DVD's also contain an area on the disc called ROM. This area can be used for PC or MAC based material, such as; Multimedia programs, PDF files, Word Document files, etc... basically anything that can not be displayed on a standard DVD player. You may wish to use this are of the DVD disc for additional material for notes, brochures or other printable literature.

The difference between DVD Players
Is there a difference between DVD Players?
YES. A DVD Player is basically a hardware box that can read the DVD video format. Where they differ is within the decoding of the video. The decoding software based on the DVD players electronic chips. Your cheap DVD player you bought from a supermarket at £20 will have different decoding logic compared to a more expensive brand of DVD player. You may not see the difference on a standard glass tube television set, but you will on some of the latest LCD or Plasma TV's, which are capable of displaying High Definition video. The main issue we have found is not in the compression rate of the DVD, but in the interlacing of the video. Our in-house DVD duplication is carried out using high quality Verbatim DVD-R discs with a Waterproof printable surface. It is our aim to provide a high quality Thermal Printing service in the near future.
DVD Replication
For duplication runs greater than 500 DVD copies we would source the most cost effective provider to supply this. Copies of 1,000 DVD's or greater would be Replicated, and again we can do all of the searching amongst our suppliers for the most cost efficient provider.
